The American Law Institute (ALI), which helped shape the current death penalty system, has abandoned their work towards shaping the capital punishment system. The ALI’s work was considered so authoritative it was cited in many key Supreme Court Death Penalty cases.
The group’s abandonment comes after a study last fall that examined the death penalty over the last 50 years. The study revealed a major problem: reconciling individualized decisions with systematic fairness. The study also revealed racial disparities in executions, the risk of executing innocents, the high cost of death penalty cases, and other issues.
