Proposed youth centre likened to residential school

The spectre of Indian residential schools reared its head at Winnipeg City Hall Wednesday, over a faith-based group’s plan to build a recreation centre in the inner city.

A full house of 200 people have packed the council chambers gallery where councillors are debating the $2.5-million proposal.

The faith-based centre in a primarily aboriginal neighbourhood stirs up thoughts of historical assimilation, some First Nations leaders told councillors.
