The NYPD has admitted that using handcuffs and arresting a 12-year-old student for writing on her desk "shouldn’t have happened." The student wrote two notes on her desk, "I love my friends . . ." and "Lex was here . . . " in green magic marker. She was promptly led out of the room in handcuffs and led to a police station across the street where she was detained for hours. The student had an excellent attendance record prior to the incident, but has not been back to school since.
The police department has admitted they are reviewing the situation, but based on what they know at this point, a mistake was made. The police acknowledge common sense should be used when determining whether an arrest or handcuffs are necessary.
