Gun rights activists, hoping to promote their cause, have been openly toting firearms in Starbucks coffee shops. Approximately 38 states in the US allow individuals to openly carry licensed firearms. Starbucks has taken the stance that where it is legal, they will allow customers to carry guns in their stores.
The Brady Campaign, a national organization that has supported various gun bans, presented the coffee chain with 28,000 signatures to try and change their mind, to no effect. Starbucks is apparently among a growing number of large retail chains to allow customers to openly carry guns in their stores. At the same time, a seemingly majority number of business ban guns on their premises, and usually display large signs in their front windows indicating the policy.
