The Utah legislature is strongly considering legislation that would seek criminal penalties for women who seek illegal abortions. The legislation is being considered in part because of the case of recent woman who paid a stranger $150 to assault her, in the hopes it would cause her to miscarry. The new law would criminalize the woman’s behavior. The bill, if passed, would still allow legal abortions performed by a doctor.
Reproductive rights advocates, however, are concerned the bill would allow prosecutors too much discretion to inquire about women’s intentions towards an unborn child. “This bill would cast suspicion, potentially, on every single miscarriage.”
