Arizona’s New Immigration Law Too Harsh?

President Obama criticized the newly passed immigration bill in Arizona, which is considered the harshest in the nation. The President urged Congress to pass federal laws regulating immigration, hoping to avoid "the irresponsibility of others."

The new Arizona law makes it a crime for failing to carry immigration documents. The police also have broad power to detain any individual suspected of being an illegal alien. Given the large Hispanic population in the state of Arizona, many believe the new law will result in unwarranted harassment of Hispanics. Arizona is the first state to require immigrants to carry immigration documents with them at all times.
