The US Department of Transportation (DOT) is seeking the largest possible fine against Toyota. The DOT is seeking a $16.4 million penalty, which would be the largest ever civil fine assessed by the US Government. Toyota now has two weeks to contest the fine. Some believe the large fine amount signals the DOT believes Toyota deliberately concealed safety information. The government has allegedly uncovered documents that show Toyota did not immediately notify the government of problems.
The DOT secretary said "“We now have proof that Toyota failed to live up to its legal obligations . . . [w]orse yet, they knowingly hid a dangerous defect for months from U.S. officials and did not take action to protect millions of drivers and their families.”
