Inundated with too many cases, public defenders in parts of Minnesota have a filed a grievance with their boss. The public defenders claim they are overworked, cannot take anymore cases, and cannot do their jobs properly because of the workload. The Constitution guarantees right to counsel, meaning the public defenders concerns are very real, and an issue of serious concern.
In the grievance, the public defenders say that because of their excessive workload, innocent people could go to prison, people will serve longer sentences, and the defenders could lose their licenses for failing to properly do their job. Although this grievance was only for part of one state, it is likely similar issues are occurring in other states around the country.
