An American citizen who presented documents verifying his ID, along with a birth certificate, was detained for three days because authorities believed he was an illegal immigrant. The citizen, Eduardo Caraballo, was born in Puerto Rico, which automatically vested US citizenship rights in him at birth.
Caraballo was arrested in connection with a stolen car. After his mother posted bail, Caraballo was still not freed, and was held by federal immigration authorities, and was told he was being detained because he was an illegal immigrant.
Fortunately, his Congressman, Representative Luis Gutierrez, got wind of the issue and intervened, which eventually led to his release. Gutierrez is a vocal advocate of immigration reform, and has protested against the recently passed immigration law in Arizona.
