The FBI has begun a criminal investigation into the West Virginia mine disaster that killed 29 miners on April 9. The FBI’s scope appears to be quite broad, ranging from possible criminal negligence on Massey Energy’s behalf, and possibly bribery of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).
Massey, the mine owner, has repeatedly been cited for violations of federal safety regulations. The company also apparently has injury rates that exceed the national norms. According to sources, the FBI has been interviewing a number of miners in an attempt to gather information. Other sources have indicated that the FBI’s involvement in this type of matter is extremely rare.
