Louisiana Passes Law Requiring Ultrasounds Prior to Abortions

The State of Louisiana will now require that all women seeking to have abortion must have an ultrasound prior to the procedure. The bill passed with a 79-0 vote, and nobody spoke out against the bill. In fact, the bill is less controversial than the original proposal, which would have required women to listen to a description of the fetus that would include its dimensions, and whether appendages or organs are visible.

Senator Sharon Broome, who introduced the bill, said that "This is a bill that empowers women . . . ." Testimony before the legislature also claimed that 95% of women who have abortions already have an ultrasound prior to the procedure.
