A public defender’s office in Missouri has closed its doors to all new cases in an effort to reduce lawyer’s workloads. The Director of the office said that the defenders in the Springfield, Missouri office simply cannot handle any more cases, saying that "[t]here aren’t any other options."
The director noted that as difficult as the decision is, increasing attorney’s workloads even more could lead to inadequate representation for clients, and could also open up attorneys to possible malpractice claims. The office will reportedly be able to accept new clients again in August. Once the maximum caseload is hit again though, the office will have to temporarily close to new clients.
