A federal judge has blocked the federal government from funding any stem cell research, based on a 1996 law that was intended to prevent the destruction of human embryos. The judge issued a preliminary injunction, based his analysis that the Plaintiffs have a strong likelihood of winning at trial.
The Plaintiffs are two scientists who challenged the new stem cell policy. Stem cell research is controversial among many groups. In particular, the latest rules allowed the use of stem cells from frozen embryos that are not being used for fertility treatments.
