Arizona Sheriff Sued By Federal Government for Refusing Document Access

The Justice Department has filed suit against an Arizona sheriff for his failure to turn over documents as part of a civil rights investigation involving the sheriff’s actions. Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio is known for being tough on crime, but the Justice Department is investigating whether his traffic stops violated the civil rights of defendants.

Arpaio has refused to hand arrest records and other information related to traffic stops and inmates. The Justice Department says that the probe began in March 2009 and Arpaio’s office has consistently refused to hand over documents.
