Courts Stop California Execution

Both federal and state courts rebuffed the state of California’s request to execute an individual, which would have been the state’s first execution since 2006.

Just last week, a US District Court Judge said the execution could go forward and offered the defendant his choice of execution methods. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, however, stepped in and suggested that choice was not consistent with California’s execution procedure and ordered the federal court to rethink its decision. The state supreme court then made similar statements days later and said the execution could not go forward.
