Northern pipeline hearings open on West Coast

Public hearings that may determine the fate of a controversial proposal to build a pipeline to the B.C. coast from Alberta’s oilsands kickoff Tuesday in the First Nations community of Kitamaat Village.

Enbridge wants to build the Northern Gateway pipeline to ship the crude to the nearby port in Kitimat where it would be loaded on tankers and shipped to markets in Asia.

More than 4,300 people have signed up to speak at the hearings, which are being conducted by a federal review panel and are expected to last until 2013.
